Steere
House
This non-profit, fully licensed, 120 bed nursing and rehabilitation center, located on the campus of Rhode Island Hospital has earned a reputation for excellence and leadership, not only in Rhode Island, but nationwide.
Changes have occurred over the century in response to the changing needs of
the community. The time-honored tradition
of promoting independence, personal dignity, individuality and self-worth has
never varied.
Founded in 1874 to meet the needs of "elderly men" in the city of Providence.
1991 a new facility was constructed in order to expand services provided to include skilled care and dementia care.
1997 a facility renovation enabled the opening of a second dementia unit, focusing on the higher functioning, cognitively challenged resident. This 16-bed unit is called "Safe Haven". Both it and the original 41-bed dementia are secured units, where residents are free to wander safely.
