Our Background

Created in 1995, the Saint Elizabeth Community is the parent organization of Saint Elizabeth Home, East Greenwich, Saint Elizabeth Manor, East Bay, and Saint Elizabeth Place, Providence. The original member of the Community is the Saint Elizabeth Home, incorporated as a non-sectarian, charitable organization in Providence in 1882. This facility has been totally refurbished and will reopen in Summer, 2003 as an assisted living facility known as Saint Elizabeth Court, Providence.

Saint Elizabeth Home was founded by Rev. David Greer, Rector and a group of churchwomen from Grace Episcopal Church in Providence. These individuals recognized that there were limited services for frail, older women who had no family and few financial resources. They visited needy women in their homes and brought food, medicine and clothing. Soon, however, they realized the need for doctors, regular meals and a 24-hour supervision.

As a result, a home was purchased on Melrose Street in Providence that provided medical care in a home-like environment - one of the first long-term care facilities in Rhode Island. With continued financial and volunteer support from the community, Saint Elizabeth Home continued to grow and currently serves 120 men and women. In July, 2002 Saint Elizabeth Home moved into its new facility in East Greenwich, RI.

In 1983 Saint Elizabeth's expanded its outreach when it developed Westminster Place in Providence. Westminster Place provides independent subsidized apartments to very low income older adults and those with physical disabilities under a HUD 202 Section 8 program.

Saint Elizabeth's purchased Metacom Manor Health Center in 1990. Located in Bristol, it was built in 1976 and is a unique facility with a child care center and a petting zoo.

Our philosophy of care remains the same for all members of the Saint Elizabeth's Community: to treat the body, mind and spirit of our resident and offer them the best available health care in a home-like environment.

Saint Elizabeth is named after Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, canonized for her service to the poor and sick. Our logo is a single rose to celebrate the miracle of Saint Elizabeth. In the legend of Saint Elizabeth, she gave aid to the poor in direct conflict with orders of the Lord of the Castle, her uncle. During one of her visits of mercy, guards caught her and demanded to see the contents of her basket. Instead of seeing the bread she was carrying, the guards found only roses.
